Portland Gate is a Grade I listed building and once the proud home of the famous Bristol born architect and designer Edward William Godwin, and was frequented by his mistress Ellen Terry the famous Victorian Actress and various friends including Oscar Wilde and James Whistler.

E.W. Godwin is responsible for the building of the Carriageworks, Stokes Croft, Wesbury-on-Trym village all and restoration of St Mary Redcliffe Church. He lived at number 21 from 1862 - 1865
